Project: Culture Clock
Design Problem
Garbage or trash is a major form of environmental pollution these days. The average person produces about 2 kg of trash a day. Many types of garbage take hundreds of years to properly decompose when thrown away.
Thread decomposes within 3 to 14 months. Cotton decomposes within a month to 5 months. Paper carry bags decompose in 2 to 5 months. Rope takes 3 to 14 months for decomposition. Milk packet (Tetra) covers and cool drink packets decompose in 5 years. Leather shoes decompose in 25 to 40 years. Nylon clothes take 30 to 40 years for decomposition. Plastic carry bags decompose in 15 to 1000 years. Aluminum cans decompose in 80 to 100 years. Glass bottles decompose in 1,000,000 years. Plastic bottles and cans never decompose.
About 90% of the contents of our bins could be reused or recycled. Producing products made from recycled material lessens the need and production of new material and eventually has a positive impact on the environment.
Design Brief
Students design and make a clock using only recycled materials. As a message to the world on the importance of recycling and reusing, the clock has to resemble the culture a chosen country. The clock could be either hanging or standing. Materials should be carefully chosen to make a strong and durable clock. Aesthetics should play an important role as clocks are as much decorative as they are time devises.
Significant Concept
Reusing trash can have a positive effect on the environment.
MYP Unit Question
How can trash be reused creatively to make a positive impact on the environment?

In third world countries where there simply no money for materials, artists are relying on reusing selected materials to create art. For them, it’s a way of life. For us, buying is a way of life and we keep producing garbage.
We can change the way we life for the good of our environment. Our green way of living should also be an example to others.
Design Brief
Students design and make an artistic and creative light. The creative light will be a message to others that there is plenty to be done with the rising piles of garbage our society throws out every single day.
Students research ways in which many works of art have been created from everyday trash. They spend time collecting recycled material of a various colors to use for creating an imaginative light.
Significant Concept
People should be informed of the numerous ways recycled garbage can be reused before they can take action.
MYP Unit Question
How can works of art advertise the possibilities of reusing and reducing garbage?

Project: Bird Feeder
Design Problem
Birds are important indicators of environmental health and play a significant role in maintaining the earth’s ecological balance by propagating plant life as pollinators and seed dispersers and controlling insect populations. Birds also bring beauty and enjoyment to our lives as one of the most accessible forms of wildlife.
Noise pollution or environmental noise from construction and many other loud activities is wreaking havoc on natural habitats and environments. Noise pollution is threatening nearly all types of bird species and altering the way in which these animals communicate, mate and even protect themselves from larger predators.
At the rate humans develop urban areas, many birds are forced to flee the areas to find quieter surroundings.
Every one of us, whatever age we are can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the damage. We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts. We all have a responsibility for our environment.
Design Brief
Students design and make a bird feeder to attract more birds to the school community. As a class project, the bird feeders will be hung in the trees on the school grounds. Students do proper research on the species of birds in the region and design a bird feeder to attract these birds. Since the bird feeder will be displayed on the school grounds, the focus will also be on aesthetics.
Significant Concept
Technology can be used to improve the quality of life for humans and also contribute to the health and well- being of a community.

Project: Eco-friendly Living
Design Problem
Environmentally friendly refers to goods and services, laws, guidelines and policies that does little or no harm on the environment. The harm done to our planet by us is more evident and people are turning to eco-friendly living in the hopes of reversing the damage done.
Recycling, reducing and reusing garbage are just a stepping stone to the solution of the problem. More and more people are turning their homes into eco-friendly spaces. One type of green home focuses on reusing material and is made from recylced shipping containers.
There are endless possibilities in living a green life. The sooner we start the better for the future of our planet.
Design Brief
Students design and make a model shipping container house with green features. They research alternative energy resources and incorporate them into their design. The house should be self sustainable and have a near-zero impact on the environment.
Significant Concept
More people are recognizing the harm done to the environment through our actions. Some have decided to lead eco-friendly lives by switching to renewable energy and creating homes from shipping containers and concrete drainage pipes.
MYP Unit Question
How can technology influence the natural and human-made environments?
