Project: Master of Puppets
Design Problem
The aim of the IB program is to develop internationally minded people who, in recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
IB learners strive to be:
Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced and Reflective.
The first and most important step you can take to grow as an internationally minded student is to fully understand this learner profile set by the International Baccalaureate.
Design Brief
Students design and make a puppet of their choice. The puppet will be the star in a short puppet show dealing with one or more attributes from the learner profile. Through this show students will understand and make others aware of the significance of the learner profile.
In small groups they research what each attribute means and write a short play that teaches a moral. The show will be captured on video and shown to others.
Significant Concept
To develop as international-minded students, you have to first understand each attribute in the IB learner profile before you can display them.
MYP Unit Question
How can I make myself and others aware of the significance of the IB learner profile?

Project: Universal Education
Design Problem
Child development is a process every child goes through. This process involves learning and mastering skills like sitting, walking, talking, skipping, and tying shoes. Children develop skills in five main areas of development: cognitive development, social and emotional development, speech and language development, fine motor skill development, and gross motor skill development.
One factor that influences child development is the environment. This includes experiences children have in their home, school and community environments. Some people refer to this as "nurture." The environment can either improve or harm a child's genetic blueprint. For example, malnourished children who live in third world countries may not reach their IQ potential because of the impact of their environment on their brain development.
In third world countries, many families cannot afford to send their children to school or either live too far from a school. In these cases, it might take a child longer to develop important skills.
Design Brief
Students design and make a learning game from recycled materials that will develop one or more of the following skills: cognitive, social and emotional, speech and language, fine motor skills.
Students make a detailed step by step plan for a child from to follow and to make their own learning game. Once they have successfully made the game, they would follow the instructions and rules to playing the game and learning a skill.
Significant Concept
Through design, we can teach those who are not as fortunate as us.
MYP Unit Question
What role does technology play in personal and social development?

Project: 3rd World Sports
Design Problem
Children who play sports reap physical and mental benefits. Active children have decreased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, other chronic diseases and obesity. According to "Promoting Physical Activity," the habit of exercise then carries into adulthood. Physical health often benefits a person's mental health. Playing sports is very beneficial for the development of social skills in a person. Sports teach a person to interact with people, act as a team. They foster collective thinking and develop planning skills in children. Sports build confidence in children and give them a sense of accomplishment. Sports thus play a vital role in one's social well-being.
In some 3rd world countries poverty causes the children to create their own equipment for playing games using recycled material. Many games are unique and passed down through generations.
Design Brief
Students design and make an original and unique sports game using only recycled materials. The sports game should focus on cardiovascular exercise and the student need to teach the game to others to promote this healthy habit.
Significant Concept
In 3rd world countries, recycled material is creatively used for making toys and games.
MYP Unit Question
How can recycled material be used for recreational activities and sport?

Project: Get Organized
Design Problem
Many people underestimate the importance of being organized. Being organized not only helps you make better use of your time, it allows you to focus your energy and direct your potential toward what it is you want most. Did you know that on average, most people waste up to two years of their lives searching for things they've misplaced? Being an organized person starts with having an organized environment.
Simplify your space. It’s difficult to stay organized when you are overwhelmed by your surroundings. Are you tripping over papers, toys and boxes? Do you find yourself constantly searching through the same drawers, closets or cabinets looking for items you know you have, but can’t find? Do you avoid your desk or other work space because it’s buried under a mountain of stuff? Free up your space so you have a comfortable place in which to focus your energy on the more important areas of your life.
Have a home for everything. Being organized means being able to find what you need when you need it. To keep things in their place, you need to know where they belong. When everything has a place, you’ll be able to put your hands on what you need when you need it.
Design Brief
Students design and make a storage device to store specific items. This will allow me to keep them organized and easy to find. The students take in consideration their learning environments to find a messy problem that needs to be solved.
Significant Concept
Storage space is designed with specific items in mind. A successful storage design allows for storing many items, having multiple uses, and taking up little space.
MYP Unit Question
How can technology help us to be organized and more efficient?
